If you are like me and the majority of people in United States, when you are shopping, there are three things in your mind: prices, quality and quantity. Yes, shoppers want the more as possible, the best quality and the best price.
Let’s recognize that is not easy to find all this things in the same product. Sometimes when the price is low the quality is compromised or if the quality is good, the quantity is few. In this opportunity, let’s focus in these three elements of your shopping experience and analyze the importance of each one of them.
First let’s ask: of these three shopping attributes, which one is most important?
Some people immediately would answer: the price, sure! Well, not so fast my friend. Yes we all want good prices, but cheap prices may not be the most important thing to consider in most of your shopping experiences. The first thing that you and I should consider is the quality of the product we are willing to buy.
How do we access the quality of a product? There are some things you can have in mind. Firstly, check the brand. Is it a well-known brand? Is it a brand with a good reputation? Secondly, check the origin. Many times the origin of a product can tell you much about its quality. For example, if you are buying potatoes, and you have two options, potatoes from California or potatoes from Idaho, you clearly should choose potatoes from Idaho because it is a state where there is a tradition on producing potatoes, so it must have more competition and the presence of competition improves the quality of a product. Thirdly, make your own examination of the product. You may have in mind reviews, other people’s opinions, but at the end you have to make your own evaluation of the product and check it against your needs. In this evaluation is good to make a comparison with other products in the market. These steps will help you consider adequately the quality of a product… but they are not all… you may think of other things to consider of your own.
Now let’s think: after the quality what should we consider next? In my opinion, now is time to consider the price. How to evaluate the price of a product? First of all, a price only is good as long as it fits your budget and your needs. Again, not so fast, it is not only because you can afford to buy a product, you should pay what is asked for it, unless you don’t care about the price. But if you are like the rest of us, we are always looking for good prices. How to know what is a good price? There is only one way: comparison. Look for the same product, same brand, and same model with lower prices. Why would you pay more for the same product? Finally, on prices, if you buy online, don’t forget carefully to consider the impact on prices of things like shipping, taxes, quantity. Sometimes the price is right, but the shipping is absurdly high; other times, the website you are buying from charges taxes, while others not , or at times is really advantageous to buy more if there are a discount being offered for buying more. These considerations about the price are only few that you should be aware of, but there are others, that relate to your own needs. Take those on account too.
Finally, you should give close attention to the quantity. You know what they say, “the more, the better”. Well, it is not always like that. The first thing you should ask yourself about quantity is: “How many or much I really need”. I have seen people to buy things in such quantity that clearly are more than they can use or consume in a reasonable amount of time. When you buy too much, remember, time has its effects on products, especially if they are perishable products. If you regularly eat three bananas a week, you can buy 4 just in case you want one more, but do not buy one dozen, because it is certainly that will be spoiled in few days. So buy what you need for the time being. Now, there are things that don’t spoil or damage with time and you use them regularly so if the price there is a promotion or the price is particularly good, you might want to buy more and stock some because you know you will need every day or every week. Consider this when you are buying cleaning stuff for your house. You always have to clean, so you may want to stock some products you found with good prices. But do not go crazy on this. Promotions and good prices always happen in a capitalist economy. It’s the law offer and demand, together with need of competition.
So there you have it, three things you need to consider to make your shopping experience an intelligent one, profitable and therefore, very satisfying.
